Rubber Gasket
Rubber gaskets are the most important class of materials that provide sealing in the medium temperature range (-50 C to +120 C). This is because the rubbers quickly return to their original shape when any deforming stress or load is removed.
Many rubbers are available for various operating conditions; But they all have one thing in common - the effect of heat is cumulative and irreversible. Maximum temperatures should not be exceeded and will allow a margin of safety due to a good design life. Many rubbers are available for simple sealing applications. Rubber is the most common gasket material and therefore 'rubber gasket' can mean many different things. These seals include everything from standard pipe seals, to oil seals, to floor seals; and it is available in many different rubbers such as neoprene, EPDM and viton.
Rubber Gasket Types;
Nitrile Rubber
General Properties: Excellent resistance to petroleum-based fluids. Good physical properties.
Resistance: Many hydrocarbons, oils, oils, greases, hydraulic fluids, chemicals
Attack: Ozone (except PVC blends), ketones, esters, aldehydes, chlorinated and nitro hydrocarbons
Cloth Elastic Rubber
Composition: Neoprene or SBR
General Properties: Excellent physical properties
Temperature Range: Neoprene -20 ° F to + 180 ° F; SBR -20 ° F to + 170 ° F
EPDM
Composition: Ethylene-propylene-diene
General Properties: Excellent ozone, chemical and aging resistance. Poor resistance to petroleum-based fluids.
Resistance: Animal and vegetable oils, ozone, strong and oxidizing chemicals.
Neoprene
Composition: Chloroprene
General Properties: Good weather resistance. Flame delayer. Medium resistance to petroleum based fluids
Resistance: Medium chemicals and acids, ozone, oils, fats, oils, most oils and solvents
Polyurethane
Composition: Polyurethane
General Properties: Good elongation and high tensile strength at high durometer readings. Excellent abrasion and tear strength
Resistant: Ozone, oxygen
SBR (Red Rubber)
Composition: SBR
General Properties: Good physical properties and wear resistance. Poor resistance to petroleum-based fluids
Resistance: Most mild chemicals, wet or dry, organic acids, alcohols, ketones, aldehydes
Silicon
Composition: Silicone
General Properties: Excellent high and low temperature properties. Fair physical properties.
Resistance: Medium or oxidizing chemicals, ozone, concentrated socium hydroxide
Viton
Composition: Viton
General Properties: High resistance to solvents, acids, base fuels, oils and hydraulic fluids. Unusual performance at high temperatures. Good tensile strength, flexibility, low compression set, low temperature range is about -60 ° F.
Resistance: Weathering, ozone, oxygen and flame
